Infinity: Keisotsu Butai

In my last Infinity post I talked about incorporating the Japanese Sectorial Starter set into my vanilla Yu Jing. Just to give me a variety in the miniatures and load outs available and thus a little flexibility in the force list. Nothing drastic, purely to see how a few minor tweaks can give me different options. The Keisotsu are the JSF equivalent of the standard Zhanshi light infantry only with slightly lower ballistic skill and willpower, so not so great on reaction but at only 9 points each decent regular order generators. They also have Courage as well so can opt to take guts rolls which is useful. As I'm  including them (for now) in a vanilla Yu Jing list I've dropped the white and [...]

Yu Jing: The end of the beginning

At the start of my Infinity journey I really knew virtually nothing about the game or it's background beyond the concept of reaction orders being a significant component. I also knew nothing about the four factions we were given to choose from at the boot camp, so why did I end up picking Yu Jing instead of one of the others and how do I feel about it now I've reached my initial target of getting them painted? Pretty good truth be told. Out of the four factions, all appealed from a visually aesthetic standpoint. I very much liked the look of the Ariadna miniatures, but the palette was nothing I hadn't done before in other games. The Acontecimento looked great as well, but having [...]

Infinity Yu Jing: Guijia TAG

My Yu Jing force is getting a boost in size (literally) with the addition of a TAG. This is the final miniature in the starter force I came away from Ireland with and I purposefully left it until last to keep me motivated to finish the rest of the group first, a reward if you like. The Guijia is one of the older TAGs in the game, but it's still pretty impressive. What it lacks in the crisper edges of the more recent releases it makes up for in pure belligerence, the round pugnacious silhouette fits it's ARM 8 profile making it a pretty durable TAG. Combine that with a Burst 1 Anti-material mode explosive ammo for the Multi-HMG and it's also pretty effective in [...]

Infinity Yu Jing: Domaru

The final miniature in my Yu Jing starter set is the Domaru Butai, which presents a completely different painting challenge to the Shang Ji. Whereas the Shang Ji is high contrast and colour saturated with the orange armour, the Domaru is a more sedate pale grey and white. A cold palette to contrast with the warm greens and oranges of the rest of the starter. In that respect the Domaru stands apart as almost clinical. This is particularly reinforced by the almost arterial scarlet scabards for the Katana and icon on the right pauldron marking her as a close-combat martial artist you really don't want to tangle with. With such a strong white palette I didn't want to start with white as that gives me nowhere to go from a highlight [...]

Infinity Yu Jing: Celestial Guard

Not much to say about the Celestial Guard as it followed broadly the same palette as the Zhanshi with the exception of having a little more blue grey in the armour. The Celestial Guard is a fairly unremarkable light infantry compared with other faction starters as it didn't introduce anything spectacular to the force such as TO Camo or infiltration. It is however a nice cheap option for a support troop and I occasionally deployed him as my Lieutenant when I wanted to play the Shang Ji more aggressively up front. Similar to the Shang Ji I built the orange up from orange brown and scrofulous brown softening the transitions with a glaze of Vallejo Sun Yellow. The rest of the palette is a duplication [...]

Infinity Yu Jing: Shang Ji

Following on from painting the three Zhanshi line troops, the next logical step for my Yu Jing starter is to get a Lietenant into the mix. So next under the brush is the first of two heavy infantry that comes as part of the set; the Shang Ji Invincible. This chap is really all about the orange armour so I do opt to use the airbrush this time to layer up the initial highlights. This method is very much in keeping with how Angel paints the studio versions for Corvus Belli and really helps gives the armour volume even before the brush edge highlights go on. Basically it saves a ton of effort which I'm always up for. Before all that though I repeat the [...]

Infinity Yu Jing: Zhanshi

I made a promise to myself on the way back home that I'd capitalise on the motivation from the boot camp to immediately crack on and get the starter set painted and game ready. This is the first stage of keeping that promise and is all about laying down the basics. The Zhanshi are the line troops for the Yu Jing and three of them are included in the set I received. As these were the first troops I learned the game with it seemed appropriate that they also be the first on the painting table. Before I get too deeply into that though there's some  pre-preparation that needs to be addressed. The boot camp was a great event for getting them cleaned up, built [...]

Learning Infinity – Part Two

Part two and the final post summing up the Beasts of War Infinity Boot Camp. Friday and Saturday were all about the set up, hobby and learning how Infinity works. It was also a fair bit of eating, drinking and generally kicking back with a bunch of sound fellas who are just as into pushing wee soldiers about as I am. So a pretty good weekend when you look at it like that. Sunday however got serious as the game-faces came out. There were prizes at stake...proper prizes. Fortunately this wasn't a 40K GT so when all was said and done the final two games of the weekend were really about putting into practice everything learned throughout the Saturday with the added bonus of including the TAG. [...]

Learning Infinity – Part One

As you'll have seen from my previous post I've been putting together a Yu Jing starter force for Infinity in an effort to finally get some traction learning the game. Normally the way these things work is I get a bunch of miniatures, quite often through whatever starter box the company does (Operation Icestorm in this instance) and that's about as far as it gets for a while. Which obviously isn't all that effective. This time things should hopefully be different as I de-camped from the man-cave last Friday and headed to Ireland for the Infinity Boot Camp being hosted at Beasts of War and run by Carlos (aka @Bostria) Designer for Infinity from Corvus Belli. Carlos explaining the background, features and attributes of the Yu-Jing faction starter [...]
