On the Workbench – Week 25

Another eclectic, but productive mix over the weekend with miniatures from Battlefront, 4Ground, Fantasy Flight and even some very old 1st edition Epic from Games Workshop. I don't often get a chance to put in a serious hobby-session over the course of a weekend, but as it was the '24 Heures du Mans' and I'm a huge fan of the iconic event I fancied putting in an equally long stint or two whilst enjoying watching Porsche take the fight to Audi. Another factor was the weather which impacted my plans to varnish the Tablescape tiles I was working on so I had time spare to just pick things I wanted (needed) to be painting instead. Starting with the smallest first, I have a game of 'Armada' coming up [...]

Huey “Hog”

As I alluded to in an earlier post, I've recently dipped a toe into the whole Vietnam Conflict for Flames of War, or "Call of Duty" as they refer to the book. For the US side of the conflict I decided to base my forces on the Air Cavalry list because, well 'Helicopters' are probably all I need to say. My palette test for these has been a Bell UH-1B "Hog" with its outrigger belt-fed miniguns and 2.75" rocket pods. It's a bit of a rough model to assemble being a blend of resin, injection plastic and white metal components, so being more than passingly familiar with some of Battlefront's World War Two offerings I knew there would be an element of cleaning, sanding and [...]

From Tet to Tobruk

It was a short working week last week with the Bank Holiday, which meant a little more hobby time than I'd normally be able to cram in. As a result something of an eclectic mix traded places on the painting station as I worked through some of the loot from Salute 2015 and cracked on with Imperial Assault for the ongoing campaign. The latter I'll come back to later. For this post however an old favourite is making a return in Flames of War with not one but three new forces spread over two conflicts. If you followed any of my occasional posts about my late war Germans, you'll know I collected probably way too much ending up with three force lists effectively for SS Panzer, [...]

Autumn plans ahoy

Things have been in a bit of an uproar the last couple of weeks, so actual painting time has been non-existent to put it bluntly. Thankfully that should change this weekend as I seek a little sanctuary in the workshop from the pandemonium without. The primary protagonists are a pair of kittens we've given a home to after they were rescued from a house along with their siblings. If you are a follower of my infrequent blogging you probably know our companion of the past ten or so years sadly had to be put to sleep after a fight with cancer. This left something of a void in the house the past couple of months, which the new arrivals have rapidly expanded to fill (not [...]

Remotes, Panzers and Brokkrs

There's so much going on in the workshop right now it's getting hard to keep on track with any plans. It seems as soon as one thing has cleared the painting table another two arrive so I'll keep it brief tonight. Recently added to the completed list is a pair of Yu Jing faction Remotes for Infinity. These aren't the start of a new army list for Infinity or anything as I'll be going pretty much with the two Operation Ice Storm starter forces of Pano and Nomads (If you follow my G+ page this probably isn't new news as I posted them a while back). They are simply a box I bought a few years back just out of curiosity to see what the miniatures were [...]

Are we having fun yet?

For the past few weeks, Monday night has been Deadzone night as Kev and I have been getting to grips with Mantic's game and it's various strike missions. This week however we tried something new; Fantasy Flight's X-Wing and instantly loved the stripped back and slick game mechanics. It felt cinematic, tight and in no time flat we'd grasped the basics and our respective pre-painted X-Wing and TIE Fighters were weaving in and around asteroids exchanging blaster bolts. In other words we were having fun with the game straight off the bat. This is probably no surprise to those of you that have already tried X-Wing, however it did unfortunately highlight something for us that I had already begun to suspect; I wasn't finding Deadzone much fun. I know [...]

Gaming night: FoW and Deadzone

Other than  priming a platoon of Stug G assault guns, there has been very little in the way of painting activity over the weekend. Making up for it however was a decent sized game of Flames at a friends house which pitched a meaty 2500 points of my Fallschirmjäger against an equal amount of Steve's Russians. It was an unusual three player affair so the German forces were divided between Kev and myself, Kev taking command of the Grenadier Platoon, Heavy Tank Platoon and Fallschirmjäger HMG platoon. I rolled up with the rest of the Fallschirmjäger Kompanie consisting of three combat platoons, supporting assault gun platoon and a 10.5cm artillery battery. We also had limited air support provided by Stuka 87-G; the first time I [...]

WIP: 15mm ‘Das Reich’ Panzer IV H

The first of three Panzer platoons finally made it onto my workbench over the weekend. I really should have painted these weeks ago as they’ve been primed and ready to go for a while now, and it’s only other distractions such as the Knight and Ent which pushed them down the list. As I’ve a number of tanks to paint for this list, I mixed up a pot of the dunkelgelb in advance which should mean all will match, even though they will get painted in separate batches. The mix is the same I used on the Halftracks and consists of 80% Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow, 20% XF-2 Flat White mixed 1:1 with Tamiya X20A Thinner. I deliberately chose to start with a pale yellow to [...]

FoW: Tank Hunters and Flakvierling

If you recall a while back I posted a picture of some un-primed Sd kfz 7/1 'Flakvierling' Halftracks with their 2cm quad anti-aircraft guns. Well, they are now painted alongside an SS Scout/Tank Hunter platoon as part of my second late war European Axis force. The guns and flatbed are magnetised with tiny 2mm x 1mm rare earth magnets. They aren't strong enough to keep everything together if you give it a good shake, but more than capable of holding the turrets in place during gaming, storage and movement. It also adds a fun tactile element as I can rotate the guns to track my opponent’s incoming flight. The Scout Platoon consists of three Panzershrek teams plus SMG command team and four tiny Volkswagen Schwimmwagon [...]

Getting all defensive

With Kev having finally painted up his US GMC tank hunter platoon and security section, I thought I'd better provide him with something to exercise them on and have been dragging out my Flames of War Germans again. Unfortunately, the Panzer platoons are too early on in the painting and not quite ready to take to the field yet, I'm a bit of curmudgeon about gaming with unpainted minis. I could of course roll out the Tiger's which would give him a worthy adversary to test the M10's mighty 3" guns against, however I have a different plan in mind. All of the games we have played to date have been more or less a standard 'meeting engagement' type affair, neither side actively taking on the [...]
