Season Three: EP02 – Leviathan Continued

Continuing the early sub-assembly stages on the Word Bearers Leviathan Dreadnought for the Horus Heresy. Commencing laying down the base metals on the joints and frame. Now available on YouTube. Summary to date: The Forgeworld Leviathan is fantastic kit for a painter simply because it is the Dreadnought with the largest flat surfaces which makes it ideal for bigger decals or marks, exactly what I want for the Word Bearers. That bulk however does make it fiddly to get at all of the details when fully assembled so I have started with a really stripped down sub-assembly, more than I would normally for a kit. This let me get the main sarcophagus and torso section painted with the head separate and then [...]

Engine Kill

It's generally not a good idea to update the blog when tired, yet here I find myself doing exactly that at the end of what's been a hectic week. Sadly not all hobby unfortunately, work having curtailed half of the week's activity and putting an end to wednesday's stream. Despite all of that however I've made great headway on stage one of the Malign Portents painting challenge for Age of Sigmar and wrapped up all of the Plaguebearers and Plague Drones with the exception of the Herald. All in all a really good start which has left me a couple of evenings spare before taking them over to the store. Just as well really as it's looking like it's going to be another frustrating week [...]

The Cult of Paint

Cult of Paint is a painting tuition initiative formed in its inception by Henry Steele and Andy Wardle. Although a relatively new endeavour with 2018 their first full year event calendar, I previously had the pleasure of being taught tank and infantry painting techniques by Henry last year under the MKA Studio banner. For me last weekend's two day vehicle painting course at Incom Gaming was a chance to refresh and cement techniques previously covered, in addition to a few new tricks. I'm frequently asked whether these courses are worth investing in. I'll answer that with the images below, the first being an Alpha Legion Deimos painted by my friend who also attended. New to both airbrush painting and many of the techniques being taught [...]

Malign Portent

If you managed to catch Friday's stream, you'll have seen me wrapping up painting of the first four Death Guard from the Dark Imperium set. These have been some of the nicest miniatures by Games Workshop I've ever assembled and painted; they go together like a dream and the scope of unique detail practically makes each a character in their own right. Absolutely love them and generally speaking that goes for most of the Death Guard/Nurgle Daemon range released recently. So much so I've been tempted into painting an Age of Sigmar 'Getting Started' box by 10th Feb for a local store challenge. I've been trying to start a small warband for Age of Sigmar but have never managed to keep it on the painting table [...]

New year, new-old army

Admittedly late to the party, well for 40K at least, the Death Guard being very much last years story but in my defence I've been trying to workout how best to make use of my original 2003 Death Guard force making them relevant again. I'm not normally one for re-working a previously painted army as never feel revisiting an old project is as productive or engaging as starting a new one and often just leads to disappointment. Quite apart from my painting approach having changed significantly during the intervening years, the miniatures are a completely different aesthetic and palette incompatible with my current range. That being said I do love a challenge and still love the direction I went with my Death Guard fourteen years [...]

Snow Angels

It's a whole new year, so I've been wrapping up two mini projects; the last of the Blood Angels from the Dark Imperium starter box (finally!) and a solitary plastic Escher gang member from the new Necromunda set. The Escher in particular was the focus of my December steams alongside the two Blood Angel Lieutenants and a single Aggressor. Since discovering a method for the red and gold I liked the Blood Angels has rapidly become my mainstream Imperium army for 8th edition throughout the year and shows little sign of slowing down anytime soon. I shunned the 'codex' approach for the Lieutenant's and avoided the split yellow/red shoulder pads or the helmet markings seen in the studio models, opting instead to stick with the [...]

S1:EP15 – The Underive

Plan for Friday's stream is to look at the terrain included in Necromunda core box as well as older legacy options and suggest painting techniques. *No sewer tentacles will be harmed in the streaming of this show.
