DZC: Scourge Desolator

The Scourge Desolator is the largest vehicle/flyer I have painted thus far for Dropzone Commander. It’s an imposing ship with its distictive downward facing ‘arms’ surrounding and one assumes focusing the power of its vast Ion Storm Generator. Being a lot larger than the other ships I didn’t think the pale palette suited the large upper surface areas of the hull as much so I spent a bit more time blending in blue and black washes around the front sensors to give it a more sinister appearance. I’m still not 100% sure I like the overall look and may revisit, or darken the palette a bit further to give it the more menacing presence as befits the invasion command ship. For now though it’s game ready which was the primary objective after all.

So where next for the Scourge?

I have a couple more units I’d like to add in the future including some ‘fast movers’ and more walkers. More infantry would also be useful as currently the only battlegroup capable of securing objectives are the Invader APC mounted Warriors which rather leaves all my eggs in one basket figuratively speaking. However, as the Scourge are technically more than intro game ready I think it’s time to make a start on the opposition.

I’ve selected the Shaltari for exactly the same reason I originally picked the Scourge; they are quick to paint yet still look effective. The new all-plastic starter set seemed a good place to start and I have bolstered this with a Jaguar walker plus a few extra other reinforcements. These should hit the painting table in the next few days once I have them cleaned up, assembled and primed.

In the meantime however, I’ve another of the 4Ground 10mm buildings completed. Technically I finished the second one just after the new year but never got around to including it in any of the recent updates. This is how it comes as a kit, but there are additional expansions you can add to increase the size of both building sections to make an even larger and more imposing single structure (or two separate but taller buildings for that matter). As it happens I also have those as well so some additional height is planned for the future. At some point in the future I will need to start giving some thought as to the gaming surface I need to make best use of all of these buildings, but that’s for another day. One challenge at a time.

Until next time, happy painting!

Carl
