You know what's great about Fridays? Getting new hobby gubbins in the post is what. I'm a big fan of water slide transfers/decals (insert your preferred nomenclature here) and had completely forgotten I was a late backer for the Infinity faction sheets being produced by Antenocitis Workshop. Hence it was a pleasant surprise when they arrived today. These are even smaller than some of Forgeworld's Heresy decals being designed for arm and armour patches on Corvus Belli's dynamic anime-inspired sculpts. I opted for a range of factions including Yu Jing, Pan O, Nomad as well as a couple of sectorials and they look great with crisp printing and vibrant colour. The other nice little package to arrive was a set of brushes from Broken Toad [...]
I was actually searching through the boxes for a head but found a foot ... I guess now I found it I ought to see if there is more and paint it someday.
https://youtu.be/jMtgswEn0Ok If I had to sum up the changes in Games Workshop this year, this Warhammer TV video would sum it up nicely. Funnily enough it's not the actual releases I'm referring to. Looking forward to seeing where Duncan, Rob and the rest of the team take things next year at a clearly more relaxed and less defensive Games Workshop. Welcome back old friend, where have you been all these years?
My West German's for Team Yankee still have some finishing touches to do, so rather than chuck up a partial post I decided to use the time tonight instead to talk about future hobby plans and where the rest of the year will probably be heading. Taking stock of the games we play in my group and where things are it's actually a positive picture. Frostgrave is ready to go as far as I'm concerned as the henchmen are done, a good selection of monsters wrapped up for the bestiary, scenery ready, gaming table (mat) on site and my first wizard plus apprentice ready to rock. Kev's even invested in some treasure tokens and a deck of the spell cards so it's actually in that nice position [...]
https://www.facebook.com/WarhammerTVteam/videos/266256350436017/ Yes, GW have historically had a challenging releationship with social media. But their recent efforts have for me at least been a welcome breath of fresh air and the Warhammer TV teams laid back approach in particular has been knocking it out of the park. Loving your work guys, keep it up!
It's a somewhat dreary day so I've abandoned the man-cave in search of entertainment elsewhere, the elsewhere being the Blast-tastic Sci-Fi themed wargames show. You can follow along on Twitter #Blast-tastic2016 or on the Facebook page (assuming I can get a signal). Failing that I'll update things right here after the action. Horizon Wars Horizon Wars is a 2-10mm combined arms skirmish game by Robey Jenkins set in humanity's future. With unit profiles based more on ability and functional purpose on the battlefield it has the benefit of not being a slave to a particular miniature range, freeing up collectors to make use of existing ranges or the freedom to pick and choose infantry, vehicles, 'mecha' and aircraft from their favourite suppliers. More about [...]
Image copyright Hawk Wargames 2016. Oh colour me excited! Looks like Dropfleet Commander is about to start shipping to the Kickstarter backers. I'm a big fan of Hawks 10mm 'combined arms' Dropzone Commander ruleset and miniature range, so have high hopes for their second game and how it interacts with the ground action. Fleet games are a surprisingly crowded marketplace with current offerings from Spartan Games, Fantasy Flight and others all competing for a wedge of the hobby dollar. Star Wars Armada, Halo Fleet Battles and Firestorm are all really solid games and that's without chucking in a couple of legacy heavyweights like Battlefleet Gothic or A Call to Arms (Babylon 5). This is the competition Dropfleet has to outshine and fortunately Hawk Wargames do seem [...]
Being a bit of a 6mm scale nut, well 'Epic' at least it would be remiss of me not to give a shout out to Angel Barracks who organise the annual "Blast-Tastic" Sci-Fi themed wargames show. If you happen to be in or around Bristol on October 1st it will be well worth a visit with over a dozen games hosted including In Her Majesty's Name, XCOM, HALO Ground Command, Horizon Wars, Infinity, Shattered Void, Dropzone Commander, KR-16 and more. A full list of traders can be found at the end of the linky right here on the Angel Barracks website.
As I sit here coffee in hand I can't help but reflect what a **** year this has been for me blogging wise. Truth be told 2016 has been a pretty rough year for a whole host of reasons, none of them hobby related it has to be said but all have had an adverse impact on this site nevertheless. I've always been pretty good at maintaining a separation between my work life and home/hobby life, rarely letting the former creep into the latter when it comes to my posts. True to that ethos I'm not going to start now, but wanted to set some context as it can't be denied the pace of events at work have left me with precious little energy or appetite for anything [...]
I've been slacking this year on the old blogging front, there's no denying it. Interestingly it's not been down to hobby fatigue or any of the usual ailments, just simply put a lack of enthusiasm for sitting down in front of a screen on an ongoing basis. My day job involves a lot of time in front of a computer so it wouldn't be untrue to say that's had a bearing recently also. Painting and hobby wise however has been continuing at a pace, largely as a result of another much needed workshop clean out and re-organisation which always invigorates the painting gene. Salute also plays a big part and although this was only my second visit to the event I always find it inspiring. [...]
