Dungeon Saga: The Adventurers As a follow up to my batch painting session of Mantic's Dungeon Saga minions I've dragged out the Heroes this weekend. I also included some of the furniture (well doors at least for now) and the last of the 'free' add-on packs, the Abyssals to get the same treatment. In the previous update I made use of Army Painter's Quick Shade to do all of the shading work as well as give the figures depth and a good layer of protection. For the Adventurers I followed the exact same approach with the addition of spending a little more time on some of the details and highlights to single them out as slightly better equipped and maintained than the Overlord's minions. Although only slightly better as they are still [...]

Painting Dungeon Saga: Fast

Although I've not been in the workshop the past few months it hasn't stopped a backlog building up of new projects and arrivals. I mentioned Mantic's Dungeon Saga in passing previously and its arrival at the back end of last year. Up until now I haven't really had the chance to look it over beyond a cursory quick check of the contents, so I pulled the box of extras out for a proper gander and to consider the best way to tackle the miniatures prep and painting wise. The figures are pre-assembled and manufactured in a coloured plastic to make things easier for those who want to use it as a plain and simple board game avoiding all of the painting malarkey. Blue for the [...]

Remotes, Panzers and Brokkrs

There's so much going on in the workshop right now it's getting hard to keep on track with any plans. It seems as soon as one thing has cleared the painting table another two arrive so I'll keep it brief tonight. Recently added to the completed list is a pair of Yu Jing faction Remotes for Infinity. These aren't the start of a new army list for Infinity or anything as I'll be going pretty much with the two Operation Ice Storm starter forces of Pano and Nomads (If you follow my G+ page this probably isn't new news as I posted them a while back). They are simply a box I bought a few years back just out of curiosity to see what the miniatures were [...]

More Rebs

Another group of Rebs has been wrapped up this week; they are motoring along quite nicely now leaving me with a more than playable strike force.  This second batch included the TK-Zero team, a pair of deployable Scout Drones, a Commander and Chovar Psychic. Technically the latter is a Mercenary and not strictly part of the Rebel Faction, however I've based the Chovar in the same style as it worked well with the bright pastel palette. I also positioned the arms so they trailed behind the creature more to give a better sense of movement as it glides across the battle zone. Never really liked the version on Mantic's site that has the arms sticking out at all angles, I felt it made the creature look rather [...]

Deadzone Rebels and more

If you follow my Twitter feed, it will come as no surprise that the Rebel faction for Deadzone has finally found its way onto my workbench this week. With both the Plague and Enforcer Factions completed, or at least as completed as can be until the hard plastic ones turn up from Mantic (current word is October-ish), I have selected a quick Reb strike team based on nothing more scientific than wanting to paint them. When the Deadzone Kickstarter was still running, the Rebs Faction was the one that most appealed to me as a gamer. The idea of a faction consisting of mixed species really pushed my buttons at the time and the concepts looked great. Unfortunately, when the miniatures arrived as part of wave one I felt they [...]

Dwarves and other short updates

The last couple of weeks has been a bit of a frenzy of hobby comings and goings as I wind down various projects and fire new ones up at the same time. Starting with what's been happening on the painting front, I've been reviewing my Lord of the Rings Dwarf warbands and looking at how the newer and older miniatures compare. It's been well over a decade since the first Games Workshop plastic Dwarf Warriors were released for Lord of the Rings and it would be unrealistic to expect the newer 'Hobbit' era Erebor Dwarves to integrate without obvious differences. The miniatures themselves haven't just moved on, clearly my painting isn't the same as it was ten years ago, my eyesight certainly isn't for one! Regardless of [...]

Deadzone: Enforcers and Hulk

Things have been a little quiet here the past few weeks, with the weather being so great and it being holiday season and all. That said, 'some' painting has been going on for Mantic's Deadzone game in a push to get all four factions complete before wave two arrives some time in August. A quick 'state of the game' update is probably warranted to bring things right up to date. As things stand, the 'Plague' faction are almost fully painted with only some base finishing needed on the final three Stage 3A. I do have a Plague Teraton as well, but am going to treat that as a extra as I don't need it right now to get some games going. Likewise the Marauders have [...]

Marauder Ripper Suit

As you can probably tell from the last few posts, Mantic's Deadzone is getting lots of time on my workbench currently and the Marauder Faction in particular is in the firing line. I finished the three standard Commandos and 'Pyro' last week so turned my attention to the specialists over the weekend. Unfortunately that was about as far as it got as I've been working away from home this week without access to the man-cave, so sadly hobby activity has been a big fat nil. Now I'm back and positively 'fizzing' with pent-up painting energy I shall resume where I left off in the last update. First up is a 'Mauler' Ripper Suit, a kind of Marauder exo-frame fitted for the close confines of an urban pacification or break-throughs. Sticking with the military/corporation equipped theme, [...]

Deadzone Marauders

Orx have been on my mind over the weekend. Not Orks, or Orcs, but Orx, or 'Marauders' as Mantic calls them in their Warpath universe. I've never been a fan of the GW style of Orks as a painter, it's not that I don't like them, just something about painting all that green that has always deterred me. Except that is in Epic (6mm) scale which I feel really suits their horde background and all those vehicles just looks, well Epic! The Marauder faction that came with the Deadzone Kickstarter thankfully is a much more manageable task with less than a dozen miniatures to worry about, so it would seem churlish not to get them painted and in-game. It also helps that Mantic's backstory for [...]

Drum roll

I found myself at a bit of a loose end earlier in the week, but didn’t really have the time or inclination to sit down for a regular painting session. Terrain painting is a great ‘gap filler’ for times like that, so I dug out a few frames of old Games Workshop fortifications and clipped out the oil drums and ‘hedgehogs’ to add to my generic scatter terrain box for games such as 40K and Deadzone. Note: shown with additional storage cases and cylinders from the Mantic Deadzone terrain sprue. Assembled into a selection of small groups they make more meaningful cover, not to mention easier to lay out in the warzone. Preparation wise I primed everything black before giving them a coat of Dark Flesh with [...]
